20mph Average Speed Cameras

Southend on Sea have recently installed the first average speed cameras to enforce 20mph in the UK. They’re due to be switch on now.

They have a mile long dead straight sea front road (Golden Mile) with lots of pedestrians around lots of risk that 20mph wont be obeyed and people get injured.

The system will be a SPECS3 which can cover single road section or be part of a group of cameras helping to enforce an areas speed limits. It will be interesting to see the impact they have.

If they have a positive impact it would be good to see Southwark enforce speed limits for vehicles crossing Southwark. With over half of the traffic on Southwark roads starting and finishing outside Southwark such drivers have little or no reason to be reasonable. Placing average speed cameras at our borough borders could really cut the number killed and injured on our roads. And the most disadvantaged Southwark residents tend to be the victims living beside noisy busy roads.
