Southwark abandons climate change fight

Several years ago the Stern Report made it clear that as a minimum Britain needed to reduce it CO2 emissions by 80%.

In response to this and other previous reports Southwark council led by Liberal Democrats adopted a pledge to reduce its CO2 emissions by 80%.

Yes 80% is “highly ambitious” but the consequences of climate change will be even more challenging. Half of Southwark could be below the water line.

Acheiving the predicted 27% reduction by 2016, largely from centralising back office functions into Tooley Street, is a start but we have to save our planet. Apart from anything else in pure econmic terms we know energy prices are only going one -way, up at an ever more alarming rate.

So what should we do. In my East Dulwich ward we have 500 terrace properties – acquired street properties. None of them have loft insulation. None of them. Virtually every other such property in East Dulwich but not the council housing.

I’m not proud that when the Lib Dems ran the council we didn’t fix this. But Labour aren’teither. This has to be a priority. Fortunately a Greater London Authority scheme may help East Dulwich buts its piece meal for Southwark.

What have you done to save the planet this month?
