I was chuffed to hear that the Trident nuclear missiles and submarine system decision about whether to replace it or not will not be decided in the lifetime of this parliament.
Further, 25% of the current warheads will be decommissioned. A great whopping tick for global nuclear disarmament.
This whole system is so 1970’s during the height of the cold war. It’s based on the premise we’ve lost a global war and we’ll wipe out the enemy who has already wiped the UK out. The machismo of all this is quite surreal in the 21st century.
I suspect the conservatives have agreed to this delay as UK plc simply doesn’t have the money to think or plan a replacement and they hope by 2016 our economic situation will be dramatically different.
Eitherway, I feel sure the Lib Dems will enter the 2015 national elections clear in our manifesto that Trident wont be replaced on a like for like basis. On present form both Labour and the Conservatives will pledge it will.
NB. gutted the Harriers are to be retired next year. Still one of the very best fighter planes flying in the hands of well led good pilots. My hunch is the Royal Air Force are glad to be rid of this rival flown by the Navy with a number of years with no commited replacement.
Unbelievable that the Lib Dems are claiming as a victory the postponing of making a decision! What political courage!
Hi Rick,
We’re in a coalition. The Tories wanted a full one replacement and haven’t got that. We wanted no full replacement. We’ve compromised + seen 25% reduction in warheards and missiles now not later. Niether Tories or Labour had planned or wanted to do this. So yes great progress and for the term of this parliament more than any Lib dem could have expected when they voted for us.
James, It would have been better for you to be gutted about the loss of Sea Harrier when it went out of service in March 2006!
Since that time the RAF and Royal Navy have flown exactly the same aircraft as part of Joint Force Harrier.
