Hilary Wines

Former Councillor Hilary Wines funeral was on Saturday. She died just over a month ago.

Before moving to the south of Southwark 9 years ago I lived very close to Borough tube for just over ten 10 years and have worked in the area for 22. During that time I was fortunate to get to know Hilary. She had strong well held views. As the chair of Southwark Cyclists we clashed occasionally. I was a trustee of Bankside Open Spaces Trust and got to know her more. I campaigned for the road I lived on to be changed and for St.Georges Garden to become something we could be proud of again. All the time getting to know Hilary better. Some years ago she asked me to stand with her in Cathedrals ward. I was so surprised, flattered and in awe of her incredible commitment I declined. But she’d planted a seed which was kindled a few years later by former Councillor Richard Thomas.

Throughout my time of knowing Hilary I was in awe of how dedicated she was. Her final councillor role had been as the first citizen, as Mayor of Southwark.

Even in death her flare for getting things done shone through. Not only had she planned her funeral when she was diagnosed with cancer but she’d included notes about how particular friends were to undertake those roles.

A truly inspiring special lady.
