Theatre Peckham

I was sorry to read that Theatre Peckham has decided not to pursue its strategic move to the currently vacant Livesey Museum. They stated that this move would have taken £5M to complete – compared to a new theatre I’d guess that’s a fraction of a new build cost.

My hunch is that the real reason if fear of alienating the new Labour administration by completing a move started under the Lib Dem administration. Theatre Peckham receives some Southwark Council funding. Raising £5M wouldn’t be easy but you’d think that was ideal territory for the National Lottery.

Sad to see Theatre Peckham exciting plans brought low by politics.

As chair of Theatre Peckham, I can confirm that the decision not to proceed with the Livesey Museum was not taken lightly. Theatre Peckham commissioned a feasibility study into the potential for the Livesey to support the development of the organisation through new workshop and office facilities. Working with Naomi Russell Consultancy we were able to gain insight into how to manage a capital appeal as well as how to find the resources to for ongoing development of Theatre Peckham and its’ work. The feasibility study identified that to refurbish the building to meet Theatre Peckham’s needs would be in the region of £5 million. Following further discussion, it was agreed that Theatre Peckham’s priority at this time was to build capacity within the organisation to deliver services, whilst maintaining an active interest in identifying a building for the organisation in the future that met Theatre Peckham’s aspirations. In the meantime we maintain our services to over 500 children each week, and can categorically state that your ‘hunch’ is completely unfounded, as we have no undue concerns regarding the new Southwark administration and intend to work with Councillors from all parties with honesty and respect. It was unfortunate timing that this decision concurred with a change in administration.
£5M for such a hugely successful youth theatre doesn’t seem impossible. I can understand reticence when the Livesey site owners Southwark Council now led by a political party with stated election pledge to reopen a childrens museum.
In the past you’ve sent me DVD’s of your work and really did enjoy seeing the rigour and challenges placed on local kids to excel. Keep up the good work.
