East Dulwich parking survey

The three local East Dulwich Liberal Democrat councillors had a big turnout of helpers on Sunday to personally call on home and deliver a parking survey to residents near to East Dulwich railway station and around Lordship Lane.

Over the last three years cllr Richard Thomas, Jonathan Mitchell and myself have had many people complaining how hard it is to park on their street. Hence the survey.

In several weeks time we should have the survey results.

Watch this space….

I live on Bawdale Road, SE22 and own one car (which I don’t use too often). I’m opposed to any move towards a controlled parking zone. Residents are generally able to park their cars on the road and in fact mostly
within sight of their houses. I like the fact that occasional visitors can park without fear of tickets
and clockwatching. I know the situation is different near the station which becomes clogged with
commuters, but a CPZ is not necessary in Bawdale.

We’re still in the process of distributing the survey around East Dulwich. This will take another 4-6 weeks as we only have councillors and volunteers to do this.
Once we’ve collated the responses we’ll let everyone know the results.

IF the results we have show residents in an area want a Controlled Parking Zone then we would ask for a formal conusltation to that end.

    We’ll keep you posted.

Living on Melbourne Grove, near Ashbourne, there is absolutely no need for CPZ. I have one car, and there are spaces reasonably near (often right outside the house) at all times of day. Having lived in a CPZ in another borough, which changed over from free usage, I can safely say it made no difference to the amount of space available. Parking was certainly not easier for residents after the introduction, as the number of cars stayed the same. The only difference was having to pay a fee every year, plus extra charges for aged relatives to park when they visited from Hull, plus endless false tickets, last minute bay suspensions and therefore towings of my legally parked car by the parking wardens, which caused endless anxiety and hassle, and (successful but laborious) challenges of such fines. The freedom of parking, without all these attendant anxieties, which we have in E.Dulwich, is actually one of the things that make the quality of life here so much better than other London areas. Long may it continue. CPZ’s serve only Council coffers, not local residents.

I agree with Mr Portal – up here on Landcroft Road there is simply no need for a CPZ. In fact, having had hassles like the ones he describes with CPZs while living elsewhere in London, if you imposed one on us, I’d move. Simple as that. They’re terrible things.
