English independence

If I was Scottish and had little or no aspiration to work or live anywhere else for me or my children then I’d be in favour of Scottish Independence.

Visiting the Shetlands Islands they seemed to be saying that they’d want independence from an independent Scotland which throws up an interesting dilemma. Especially important as oil taxes are presumed to pay for everything according to independence minded Scots and most oil is found of off the Shetland Islands

So what would independence look like.

As a Londoner I’d hope that what remains of the UK would become far more federal with far far more decision making taken significantly more locally – English independence!

For Scotland it would see many currently UK national institutions moving to England & Wales. Wales. Well probably not. Organisations moving once due to independence probably wouldn’t take that risk again. Little things like all the UK army records leaving Glasgow. Bigger things like no standard Royal Mail letter and parcel prices – probably resulting in many UK facing Scottish based businesses moving to England. Phone calls would probably be charged internationally. The daylight saving argument ends with England being on European time and a different time zone to Scotland. Huge ructions for thousands and thousands of organisations both public and private, and many hundreds of thousands of jobs, that find being part of a UK national market ideal.

I’d imagine that the UK embassies would remain UK embassies if fractionally smaller but Scotland would need to set up such a network afresh. Presumably UK should relinquish various international leadership roles such as the permanent seat on the UN security council but perhaps that would be a good thing.

What do you think would happen with Scottish independence?

How on earth would our not being on the Security Council be a good thing? Leave it to the French, Chinese and Russians? What a terrible thought. Do you not believe our influence in the world is, in general, a positive one?
